Samsung Data Migration issues
This is just a short note for anyone out there having troubles cloning a disk with the Samsung Evo Data Migration software.
You must run the Data Migration software on the same disk you are cloning.
Cloning while running an operation system seemed like the wrong thing to do. So I connected the source disk and the destination disk to a new Windows machine. However, the Data Migration software only wanted to clone my new Windows machine. So that was a no-go. Ok, let’s do the wrong thing and install the Data Migration software on the source disk and boot from it.
“Please connect a Samsung SSD”
All set. I connected the destination disk and for a flash second, it appeared on the screen. Then it just said: “Please connect a Samsung SSD”. No matter what connection I tried, the software just couldn’t see the disk. Apparently, since the new update to version 5, the Data Migration software needs an internet connection to check whether you have a real Samsung SSD. If you don’t have internet, the Data Migration software just doesn’t detect any Samsung SSDs.
I was trying this in Windows Save Mode, so internet was not enabled. I rebooted into Save Mode with network on, and the SSD got detected.
“Cannot create a snapshot”
After you have enabled internet, the SSD gets detected and you can start cloning. Nope, still not working. Cloning starts, but immediately ends with an error “Cannot create a snapshot”. It tells you to stop some Windows service, but that doesn’t help. What does help is booting into normal mode (so no safe mode). Which I initially didn’t want to do because… again: cloning a live disk seemed like the wrong thing to do. Cloning from safe mode… felt safer :-)
Success
Finally, I was able to clone my disk using an internet connecting and in normal mode. If Samsung could just give some more thorough feedback on what’s going on, I might have not have lost 2 hours of my time.
